Breaking the Myths: Why Movement Matters More As We Age

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in nearly two decades of helping people move better, feel stronger, and live more empowered lives—it's this: aging is not a limitation. It’s an invitation to approach our health more intentionally, more holistically, and more compassionately.
However, I often see people in their 50s, 60s, or 70s hesitating to start moving again. Not because they don’t want to feel better—but because they’ve been told a set of stories that simply aren't true.

I recently earned my Older Adult Fitness Certification, which provides me with advanced knowledge and expertise in working with the older adult population. This specialized training deepened my understanding of the unique physical and cognitive challenges that can accompany aging, from balance and mobility concerns to loss of strength and joint health issues. I'm passionate about creating safe, effective, and empowering movement experiences that support longevity, independence, and overall well-being.

Let’s break those myths down.
🧠 Myth #1: “I’m too old to start exercising.”
Truth: It’s never too late. Our bodies are brilliantly adaptive. I’ve worked with clients well into their 70s who have improved their strength, balance, coordination, and even their confidence—just by committing to a few sessions a week.
🦴 Myth #2: “Exercise will make my joint pain worse.”
Truth: The right kind of movement—functional strength, mobility training, and low-impact conditioning—can reduce pain. When we train the body as a whole system, we promote better circulation, joint health, lymphatic drainage, and nervous system regulation. Less inflammation = less pain.
🧓🏼 Myth #3: “Older adults should only walk or do light stretching.”
Truth: You deserve more than a watered-down version of wellness. My programs for older adults include strength training, posture work, breathwork, core stabilization, and even mindful mobility. All tailored to your current capacity, with space to grow.
The Whole-Picture Approach
When I talk about holistic training, I’m talking about honoring every part of your being—body, mind, and spirit. Aging well isn’t just about strong muscles. It’s about:
Feeling confident in your body
Trusting your balance again
Being able to carry your groceries or hike that trail
Having energy after a walk—not needing a nap
Breathing deeper and sleeping better
Reducing fear of falling, injury, or decline
The Real Barriers to Movement in Later Life
I know it’s not always simple to begin. Many of my clients tell me:
"I’m afraid of hurting myself."
"I’ve never worked out before—I wouldn’t know where to start."
"I’ve been dealing with arthritis and feel stiff all the time."
"I feel embarrassed to move in a group."
I hear you. That’s why I create safe, supportive, one-on-one sessions—designed to meet you exactly where you’re at. We take into account your medical history, your emotional wellbeing, your lifestyle, and your goals. This isn’t about punishment or pushing too hard—it’s about reconnection.
